Primarily bred for hunting, the Podengo developed a keen interest in hunting rabbit - from where its name derives - and was commonly utilised in ratting and guarding property. Some suggest a likeness with the Pharaoh Hound, which migrated to the Iberian Peninsula, whilst others speculate that the breed is a direct descendent of small Iberian wolves crossed with the dogs of Phoenician traders. Health concerns include hip dysplasia.The Podengo, meaning 'rabbit hunter' in Portugese, is the country's National Dog, despite being of uncertain origin. DaSilva says, "The breed's compact size makes for a good family pet, and the dogs have lots of energy for kids." The breed is also good with other family pets. This is not a reserved or standoffish breed who will relish life in the backyard these dogs want to be with their people most of the time. This breed needs an owner who will enjoy an affectionate dog. They typically bond more strongly with one family member and may respond to training better with that person than with other family members. The training should be structured yet fun. Portuguese Pointers are very people-oriented and very affectionate. Although the breed retains its ancient hunting instincts, it's not necessary for the dog to be in a hunting home however, the dog should have a chance to run every day. The coat is short and flat and can be any shade of yellow or brown, with or without white markings. The body is as long as the dog is tall, creating a square when viewed from the side. This breed stands between 20 and 22 inches tall and weighs 35 to 59 pounds. In the 1700s, dogs were taken from Portugal to England, where the breed had an influence on the development of the English Pointer.
